BRANCHES OF NON-COMMISIONED OFFICERS IN THE NAVY

         In Turkish Armed forces, branches of staff are tackled as combatant and deputy classes. As it can be understood, the staff can be defined as combatant, who work in combatant units and deputy class,and those who work behind the line to support the services of combatant class.Combatant staff serve in their units from 6 to 22 years whereas deputy class work 2 years minimum and 4 years maximum.

         COMBATANT BRANCHES:
         Gunnery, Guided Missile, Maintenance,Torpedo, Mine, Navigation, Boatswain, Anti-submarine warfare, Radar, Radio, Mechanist's mate, Boiler technician, Electrician, Damage Control, Electronics, Marine corps, Intelligence , Naval Infantry.

         Supply,Music Band,Technician, Corpsman branch, Yeoman class branch.

GUNNERY BRANCH

Definition: Non-commisioned Officers whose duties are to operate and to keep maintenance of the guns on ships and navy posts are called Gunner's mate. Naval Duties and Durations: They serve approximately 13 or 14 years on ships and then in navy posts.

Duties: They keep the maintenance of guns in harbour and before the shots which are used against planes and targets on sea.They keep the system ready. The system which operates the guns consists of electric and hydraulic systems. Therefore they have good knowledge of those systems. They use those to operate the machines.


FIRE CONTROLMAN

Definition: Non-commisioned Officers whose duties are to operate and keep the maintenance of electronic systems of guns and guided missiles used on ships and navy posts are called fire controlman.

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships about 13 or 14 years and then in navy posts.

Duties: Electronic systems are being used to shoot the targets by guns and guided missiles which consists of radar,optical,and electro-optical equipments.Fire controlman operates and keeps the maintenance of guided missiles and guns in harbour and before the shots which are used against planes and targets on sea.They keep the system armed. Fire control systems consist of computers and electronic circuits. Therefore a fire controlman has good knowledge of computers and electronic circuits. They use those to operate the machines.


GUIDED MISSILE BRANCH

Definition: Non-commisioned Officers whose duties are to operate and to keep the maintenance of guided missiles are called missile technician.

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships about 13 or 14 years and then in navy posts.

Duties: They keep the maintenance of guided missiles and the gunnery in harbour and before the shots which are used against planes and targets on sea. They keep the system armed. Guided missiles consist of electric and hydraulic systems. So, they have good knowledge of electric, mechanic and hydraulic systems to operate the machines.


TORPEDO BRANCH

Definition: Non-commisioned Officers whose duties are to operate and to keep the maintenance of torpedo (sub-marine guns) are called torpedoman's mate.

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships about 18 or 19 years and then in navy posts.

Duties: They keep the maintenance of torpedos and their systems in harbour and before the shots which are used against sub-marines and targets on sea. They keep the system armed. The systems which operate sub-marine launchers consist of electric and hydraulic systems. Therefore they have good knowledge of electric, mechanic and hydraulic systems to operate the machines.


MINE BRANCH

Definition: Non-commisioned Officers whose duties are to operate and to keep the maintenance of mines are called mineman.

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships about 6 or 7 years and then in navy posts.

Duties: To keep the maintenance of mines that will be used against ships and submarines, mine laying systems, mine sweeping systems at the port, and do the preparation before laying or sweeping mines.


NAVIGATION BRANCH

Definition: Non - commissioned officers whose duties are to do the calculation to move the ships from one destination to the other and to use the system and documents about this are called quartermasters

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships about 21 - 22 years, and then in various Navy Posts.

Duties: They prepare the navigation plan from the port of departure to the port of arrival and the seas that the ship will pass through before the navigation. They determine the place of the ship on sea by using the electronical instruments, the navigation devices, the maps, the navigation documents and they mark it on the map during navigation. They calculate the other necessary astronomical and hydrographical information about navigation. They update the navigation maps and the documents and keep them properly. They use the electronical and mechanical navigation devices. Additionally, they execute the communication of the ship.


BOATSWAIN BRANCH

Definition: Non - commissioned officers whose duties are to operate and keep the maintenance of every navigation equipment on ships are called boatswain's mate.

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships about 15 - 16 years, and then in various Navy Posts.

Duties: They know how to operate and keep the maintenance of every mobile and immobile equipment about navigation such as ropes, anchor, the chain of anchor very well and they use them. They overhaul every part of the ship except the guns and the machines of the ship. They know and apply the painting of the ship


ANTI - SUBMARINE WARFARE BRANCH

Definition: Non - commissioned officers whose duties are to operate and keep the maintenance of sonars (devices which observe underwater with sound signals) and similar acustic tools on ships, planes and helicopters are called anti - submarine warfare petty officers.

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships, planes and helicopters of Navy about 19 - 20 years, and then in various Navy Posts.

Duties: Sonar is an acustic (Works with sound signals) device which is used to determine the submarines underwater. Anti - submarine warfare petty officers do the preparation of sonars and other acustic tools at the port before navigation. They always keep these acustic devices ready for use. They find submarines by using these devices when necessary. The particulars of sea water (heat, saltiness, pressure, etc) affect the sound signals spreading from and coming to the sonars and other acustic tools. Therefore, anti - submarine warfare petty officers know the effects of sea water on sound signals, evaluate or estimate these effects, use the devices and computer programs of evaluation and estimation very well.


RADAR BRANCH

Definition: Non - commissioned officers whose duties are to use radars and the systems connected to radars on ships, planes, helicopters and Navy Posts are called operations specialists.

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships, planes and helicopters of Navy about 15 - 16 years, and then in various Navy Posts.us Navy Posts.

Duties: Radar is an electronical device which determines the ships, planes, helicopters, missiles, land vehicles ,etc by hitting and coming back of its electromagnetical spread. Operations specialists operate the radar devices, determine and evaluate the fixed thing. In addition to radars, they use communication tools, electronical recognition and introduction devices, track tables, maps, electronical navigation devices in the place they work (Combat Operations Centre)


RADIO BRANCH

Definition: Non - commissioned officers whose duties are to use the communication devices and the systems connected to communication on ships and Navy Posts are called radiomen.

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships about 11 - 12 years, and then in various Navy Posts.

Duties: They operate every kind of communication devices and provide communication on ships and navy Posts.


MACHINIST BRANCH

Definition: Non - commissioned officers whose duties are to operate and keep the maintenance of the machines and the systems connected to these machines on the ships which's machines work with the power of steam are called machinist's mate.

Naval Duties and Durations: They serve on ships about 12 - 14 years, and then in various Navy Posts.

Duties: They operate and keep the maintenance of machines, turbine, compressor, pump, valve, pipes and connected systems in steamboats.

Note: Because the number of steamboats are lessened, machinist's mates are not trained every year.


BOILER TECHNICIAN BRANCH

Definition: Petty officers whose job is to operate and keep maintenance of the steam engines and the systems that work with those engines of the ships.

Naval Duties and Durations: They work approximately 11-13 years on board and later they complete it at the naval bases.

Duties: To operate, keep maintenance, and know the working principles of all the steam producing engines, compressors, pumps, valves, pipe circuits of the Navy Ships and Bases, and the systems that work on those machines and engines.

As the numbers of steam ships are decreasing by the time, Steamer petty officers are not to be graduated annually


ENGINEMAN BRANCH

Definition: Petty officers whose job is to operate and keep maintenance of diesel engines and gas tribunes at the ships and naval posts.

Naval Duties and Durations: They work approximately 19-21 years on board and later they complete it at the naval bases.

Duties: To operate, keep maintenance, and know the working principles of all the diesel engines, gas tribunes, compressors, pumps, valves, circuits, and the systems that work on those machines and engines of the Navy.


ELECTRICIAN'S MATE BRANCH

Definition: Petty officers whose job is to operate and keep maintenance of every type of electric systems of the ships and naval posts.

Naval Duties and Durations: They work approximately 15-16 years on board and later they complete it at the naval bases.

Duties: To know the working principles of all the diesel engines, repair when needed, operate, keep maintenance of these engines and gas tribunes, compressors, pumps, valves, circuits, and the systems that work on those machines and engines of the Navy.


DAMAGE AND FIRE CONTROLMAN BRANCH

Definition: Petty officers whose job is to fight fires, leaks, inundations, and CBRN attacks on board and naval posts.

Naval Duties and Durations: They work approximately 14-15 years on board and later they complete it at the naval bases.

Duties: To know how and fight inundates, explosion of water and fuel sytems, ship's balance lose, fire on board or at the bases, NBC attacks, and to repair and keep maintenance of the equipments related.


ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN BRANCH

Definition: Petty officers whose job is to operate and keep maintenance of every type of electronic systems of the ships and naval posts.

Naval Duties and Durations: They work approximately 13-15 years on board and later they complete it at the naval bases.

Duties: To operate, keep maintenance, repair every type of electronic equipments and devices on board and at the bases. There are three branches in it: warfare, gunnery and electronics.


SUPPLY BRANCH

Definition: Petty officers who run monetary and service business of the ships and naval posts.

Naval Duties and Durations: They work approximately 6-7 years on board and later they complete it at the naval bases and posts.

Duties: To run the monetary stuff, properties, merchandise, inventory and service (storage, supply, distribution and establishing needs) on board and bases in time and when needed. In the bases their jobs are classified as the stocktaker, the accountant, system arrangement and improvement …etc.


DATA SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN BRANCH

Definition: Petty officers who operates and keeps maintenance of every type of data systems at the first level on board and at the naval bases

Naval Duties and Durations: They have no on board assignment; they are appointed to the naval bases and posts.

Duties: Responsible for the maintenance, security and repairment of the data systems at the first level. He also undertakes the computer based laboratories, classrooms and simulators. He renovates and fixes the breakdowns of the computer networks.


YEOMAN BRANCH

Definition: Petty officers who run office business of the ships and naval posts.

Naval Duties and Durations: They work approximately 1-2 years on board and later they complete it at the naval bases and posts.

Duties: To do filing, bureaucracy, official procedure, formalities, paperwork on board and at the bases. ID cards, billet arrangement, medical cards are filled and given to the military staff by the yeoman branch.
